Neighbors at Hawkins exists to support the students and teachers of Hawkins Elementary school in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The program assists in providing quality education, building student self-esteem, and expanding the personal vision of students for themselves, their community and their world.

Neighbors at Hawkins partners with America Reads – Mississippi (ARM) AmeriCorps, a nationally accredited reading specialty program, to hire full-time tutors. With the addition of the ARM tutors, the dedicated Neighbors at Hawkins staff, and consistent support from community volunteers, the students of Hawkins Elementary are thriving.

​All students selected to participate in the Neighbors at Hawkins Tutoring Program initially scored below grade level standards. Students who received tutoring during a four-month period experienced a 22 percent average increase in reading assessment scores and the number of students scoring in lowest category decreased by half.
