SUMMARY:100th Birthday Celebration and 100th Anniversary of Passage of 19th Amendment
DESCRIPTION:LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS - PINE BELT AREA \n\n100th Birthday Celebration and 100th Anniversary of Passage of 19th Amendment\n\n\n\nIn 1919\, the United States Senate passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving women the right to vote. (The amendment was originally introduced in Congress in 1878\, but was finally adopted 41 years later). The next year\, 1920\, The League of Women Voters was established in Washington\, D.C. As is often said\, 'the rest is history.'\n\n \n\n The official date of the League's 100th Anniversary is February 14\, 2020. To celebrate both the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment and the 100th birthday of The League of Women Voters\, the Pine Belt chapter of the League will host the actual celebration on Saturday\, February 29\, 2020\, with co-sponsor\, The Saenger Theatre. The doors to the Saenger Theatre will open at 6:30 p.m.\, and beginning at 7:00 p.m.\, there will be a special screening of the women's suffrage movie\, Iron-Jawed Angels\, starring Hilary Swank and Angelica Houston. A champagne and cupcake reception will follow the movie. This event is free and open to the public.\n\n---------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan\, political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government\, works to increase understanding of major\n\npublic policy issues\, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League has two separate and distinct roles: voters' service/citizen education and action/advocacy. As a strictly non-partisan\, membership organization\, The League encourages voter registration and education on issues facing our country\, especially those relevant to the Pine Belt area. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League never supports or opposes any political party or candidate at any level of government. The League is a grassroots organization working at the national\, state\, and local levels.\n\n \n\nThe League of Women Voters was established in Washington\, D.C. in 1920 after women won the right to vote. A membership organization\, The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation. Membership is open to women and men.
